Population

The population of the Banbridge District has increased significantly since the early nineties. Its 41,392 inhabitants represent 2% of the total population of Northern Ireland. Census figures reveal a population increase of 23.62% between 1991 and 2001 compared to the Northern Ireland average of 6.8%, making it the fastest growing area in Northern Ireland.

According the 2003 mid-year population estimates, the Banbridge District had a population total of 43,083. Approximately half of its 15,188 households are located in rural areas and small villages. The District has an average household size of 2.71 compared to the Northern Ireland average of 2.65. With an average of 91 persons per square kilometre, the District is less densely populated than other parts of Northern Ireland, where the average is 119. There is an equal gender balance in the District. Age structure analysis indicates that 60% of the population is comprised of the economically active 16 to 64 age group.
