Banbridge District has a very healthy community. The life expectancy for males is 75.2 years and 78.6 years for females. Approximately 11% of the District’s population suffer from a disability. In 2002, 577 births and 329 deaths were registered in the District. The most common causes of death in the Banbridge area are from diseases of the circulatory system, particularly heart disease. The Craigavon and Banbridge Local Health and Social Care Group area has the lowest uptake rate for breast screening and the highest percentage of heavy smokers within the Southern Board. Falling within the Southern Health Board’s area of responsibility, Craigavon and Banbridge Community HSS Trust is responsible for the management and delivery of a comprehensive range of health and social services within the District. With the majority of its patients being seen within three to six months, the Trust performs very well compared to the standard of care provided in other parts of Northern Ireland. Craigavon Area Hospital deals with the majority of primary care cases from the District.The District is set to benefit from a £15 million Community Health Village project, which will provide an integrated one-stop-shop for an enhanced and expanded range of health care and social services, at a central location in Banbridge. In addition, the area has received £1 million to develop a Healthy Living Centre.
