As a socially responsible organisation, Banbridge District Council is committed to reducing the negative impact it has on the environment. It has therefore produced an environmental policy that sets out its desired aim of becoming an environmental leader for the district and actively introducing positive measures in the management of facilities and delivery of services to enhance the local environment for future generations. The Council firmly believes that it has a corporate responsibility to examine its business activities and lead by example by introducing more sustainable practices and policies wherever possible. This policy identifies key areas for action, including energy usage, waste, water, sustainable procurement and possible pollution.
Sustainable Development Policy
Since 31st March 2007, every council in Northern Ireland has a statutory duty to promote the achievement of sustainable development. Sustainable development is about achieving a better balance between economic growth, environmental protectionand social progress without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The Council recognises the central role that it has to play in promoting sustainable development and to this end, it has produced a sustainable development policy that outlines how it will strive to act as an exemplar for sustainable development, ensuring that its own policies and actions provide a lead to local and wider communities on what can be achieved to promote sustainability.
Sustainable Procurement Policy
Banbridge District Council aims to purchase goods in a way which minimises the impact on the environment by minimising the amount it purchases (only purchasing goods which are necessary for the successful delivery of services) and striving to ensure that the environmental impact of production, transportation, use and disposal is minimised for all purchases. The Council aims to ensure contractors/suppliers also adopt environmental standards which are at least as good as the Councilís and reflect recognised environmental best practice. All contractors/suppliers must agree to comply with all environmental issues contained within the ISO14001 documentation when delivering a service on Council property.
